My Love Affair with Harlequin Mills & Boon

Harlequin Mills & Boon, pippa roscoe, conquering his virgin queen

With Valentine’s Day getting closer, romance is on my mind more than ever. I have two great loves in my life. My darling husband is the first love of my life, of course! The second is Mills & Boon, as they are known in the UK, or Harlequin as they are known elsewhere.

Mills & Boon started my life long love affair with romantic fiction. I just can’t get enough of feisty heroines, gorgeous heroes and a guaranteed happy ever after  … what more can a romantic soul want?

Hope you like the photos of some of my ‘vintage’ Mills & Boon books.

Harlequin Mills & Boon

I started reading Mills & Boon books when I was very young, about ten years old. My Grandma Ada and her sisters, Aunty Lily, Aunty Betty and Aunty Elsie were all huge fans of Mills & Boon. They didn’t have much money, so they would club together and buy a Mills & Boon romance from the second hand book stall in Great Homer Street Market (or ‘Greaty’ as it is known by Liverpudlians). Then they would all converge around the kitchen table, baking or knitting, and ask me to read aloud to them. In those days, Mills & Boon books didn’t venture beyond the bedroom door so they were completely appropriate for me to read, even at that age.

Mills & Boon have so many different series, we readers are spoiled for choice. My favourite lines are Modern (or Presents as they are known in the US) and historical.

One of my favourite ever Modern romances is by one of my favourite ever authors, the wonderful Kate Walker, and it’s called ‘A Proposal to Secure His Vengeance’ … this is such an emotionally compelling story with an amazing heroine, Imogen O’Sullivan.

Other favourite Modern/Presents authors are Rachael Thomas, Pippa Roscoe, Heidi Rice, Maisey Yates, Clare Connelly, Dani Collins … to name a few!

Mills & Boon sell many of their books in a ‘2 books in One’ format. This gives you a chance to read authors that you love and also find new authors to love!

I recently bought a ‘2 in One’ because it featured one of my favourite authors, Natalie Anderson, and her latest novel ‘The Queen’s Impossible Boss’.

The other novel was a debut by Marcella Bell called ‘Stolen to Wear His Crown’. The heroine, a scientist called Mina, was brilliantly written. Having spent a lot of my career in academia, the fact that the heroine was a scientist and an academic was so interesting. Marcella is definitely now on my list of favourite authors.

Harlequin Mills & Boon, toff

I’m also loving the fact that Georgia ‘Toff’ Toffolo, everyone’s favourite Queen of the Celebrity Jungle and star of one of my favourite TV programmes ‘Made in Chelsea’ is now a Mills & Boon author.

Her debut novel ‘Meet Me in London’ is as adorable as Toff herself.

The Mills & Boon historical series is a constant source of joy as there are so many gorgeous historical novels in so many different historical sub genres. Who doesn’t love a Regency with a dashing hero …? Thank you Virginia Heath, loving your work!

I can also highly recommend two wonderfully compelling Medieval novels: ‘The Rebel Heiress and the Knight’ by Melissa Oliver, which won the Romantic Novelists’ Association Joan Hessayon Award in 2020. Such an exciting story and such a feisty heroine, Eleanor of Tallany.

And congratulations to Ella Matthews for her well deserved nomination for the Libertà Books Shorter Romantic Novel Award 2021 for her fantastic novel ‘The Warrior Knight and the Widow’. Oh what a hero … Sir Braedan Leofric … sigh!

So that’s the story of my love affair with Harlequin Mills & Boon! I can’t wait to hear how you lost your heart to Mills & Boon and which novels and authors are your favourites … let me know, fellow M&B fans!

I love to have M&B chats!

Love from Lily x
