What’s the perfect read for Valentine’s Day?

valentine's day books

Valentine’s Day has to be the perfect day to read a romantic novel. I do love Valentine’s Day. I’m so lucky that my darling hubs is perfectly romantic every day of the year …

But it always feels extra specially romantic to have an entire day dedicated to love and romance! He always buys me such thoughtful presents and always gets me books from my wish list. I’m recommending a couple of books that are perfect for reading on Valentine’s Day.

So curl up in a cosy armchair with a mug of hot chocolate or a glass of something chilled and have a lovely long read …

all that was lost, perfect read for valentine's day

The first novel I’m recommending is ‘All That Was Lost’ by Alison May.  It’s about  Patrice, a nationally celebrated medium, who tells people what they want to hear, but has secrets of her own that she does not want found out …

The character of Patrice is unique and brilliantly realised. Although I’ve now read the novel four times, I keep on wondering about so many aspects of Patrice’s life. Each time I read the novel I find it reveals something new and surprising about Patrice and also about life and relationships in general.

It has some challenging moments and explores difficult subjects such as grief. But it is so beautifully written and so thoughtful in the exploration of these themes that the story touches your heart in so many ways. I cry every time I read it, as Alison May writes about emotion with such perception and understanding.

a princess in theory, perfect read for valentine's day

The other novel I’m recommending is ‘A Princess in Theory’ by Alyssa Cole, a fun and contemporary take on the classic trope of Cinderella and Prince Charming.

The heroine, Naledi Smith is a scientist and an academic.

Alyssa, you had me at STEM.

I love an academic heroine, having worked in the university sector for a great deal of my career. It’s not only a wonderful romance, there is a mystery in the plot. Also, the supporting characters are really engaging and Alyssa explores the dynamics of female friendship and how friendships are affected as our lives change and new relationships develop.

The novel was one of the New York Times’ 100 Notable Books of 2018.

Have a happy Valentine’s Day and let me know what your favourite Valentine’s Day reads are.
